Across the Sapphire Seas

Published in 1997, Across the Sapphire Seas continued the passionate historical saga set in nineteenth century Australia which began with Beyond the Purple Hills. There is another chapter in this popular series, but it is as yet unpublished.

” To her parents’ relief, Niamh McDiarmit appears to have given up her ambition to become a nurse – a profession considered not quite respectable in Melbourne in 1878. Even though she works behind the bar at TUlly McDiarmits saloon, the Silver Star, Niamh is nothing if not respectable; her sober, high-necked gowns and her engagement to wealthy Hollis Maitland are quite enough to keep unruly customers at bay.

Until the day Judah Burden walk into the Silver Star. he new English foreman of the iron foundry is unlike any man Niamh has met before. Tall, broad-shouldered and with bold dark eyes that seem to see right through her prim facade, Niamh is both disturbed and fascinated by Judd – even when it seems that he is paying court to her friend Sukie, his boss’s daughter. Her ordered life ruffled, the rebellious fifteen-year-old who so wanted to become a nurse begins to stir again after long supression in the name of duty.

In their mutual fascination, neither Niamh nor Judd notice the powerful effect the name Burden has on Tully. And when Judd declares he intends to seek the uncle who disappeared with a mysterious inheritance years before, TUlly must face losing the two things he holds most dear: his daughter and his business, founded on a secret which he fears must face the daylight once more…”
